The first week of school is officially over and I am pooped!

Confidence is Key

Good morning! 

I just wanted to share something with y'all that has recently come over me....confidence! 

Not only has changing my lifestyle changed the way I eat, but it also has helped me accept myself and my body image. No, I'm not a Victoria's Secret model or some sort of skinny goddess, but I am ME.

It's so crazy to think that as I continue to carry on a healthy life style, I have been more confident in the way I look!

My whole life I have struggled with insecurities. Whether it was weight, how I dressed, or even what people thought of me. I lacked confidence. I always had (and sometimes still have) to have some sort of reassurance. I would compare myself to others constantly. Well, over the past couple of months I have been changing....changing my lifestyle, in fact. I wrote a post called "Up Close and Personal" which talks about my life before my journey of changing my lifestyle. If you haven't read it yet, you should! :) 

But let's fast forward to now. How am I handling this lifestyle change?

After starting my blog, my best friend, Hannah, thought it would be a good idea to take some pictures of me for the blog. Okay. I was a little excited, but at the same time I was nervous! After we took the pictures, I was pretty pleased with the results! Once I posted them, I started receiving such uplifting and encouraging comments. I remember reading one comment stating how happy I looked. That's the thing.... Taking those pictures and seeing such kind words made me realize that I AM happy! 

Recently, I had the owner and founder of Sideline Sass, Megan, contact me after reading my blog. I was told that I would be a good representation for her company, and had the opportunity to partner up with her. I was in shock! I had never modeled clothing, nor ever been asked to do such a thing! Let me tell you, I am so glad I did it. It's so amazing (and fun!) to embrace my achievements of my lifestyle change through clothing. 

Changing my lifestyle has seriously been one of the best things I've done. A lifestyle change isn't just about eating healthy, it's about appreciating your body. It gives you confidence.

What Protein Powder Do You Choose?

I've had a few requests for this one....

What protein powder do I recommend?

In this post, I will be breaking down different protein powders along with my suggestions.

First, why do I use protein powder and when do I use it?

I use it in a breakfast smoothie when I'm on the go, or I use it in a protein shake after a workout (and I even use it to cook! Don't worry, I will have recipes posted soon). I use it as protein…to satisfy and fill me up, or after a workout to help build muscle.

Let's explore the different types:

Soy: Soy protein is formed and defatted from soybean. It has been proven to be beneficial to the human body. It can act as a substitute for a meat protein, help reduce cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease, increase the effectiveness of other foods because of the amino acids it has, and helps reduce the risk of colon and prostate cancer. 

Whey: Whey protein comes from the by-product of cheese actually. It is low in lactose and contains all 9 essential amino acids. It is known to increase the body's power, fight effects of bad moods, and disease. According the Men's Health, whey is said to aid in losing fat and preserving muscle, increasing size and strength of muscle, reduce hunger, fight cancer, get rid of stress, and improve our immune system.

Vegan: Vegan protein is obviously formed from plants and more natural. A lot of people choose vegan proteins because they don't choose to eat dairy. Also, some choose vegan because it is less processed in most cases. Some options of vegan protein powder are the following: hemp protein (it is said to have more fiber than others), brown rice protein (I've heard that Sun Warrior is a great brand), and yellow pea protein.

Casein: Casein comes from milk. According the Men's Fitness, casein "has the ability to provide your bloodstream with a slow and steady flow of amino acids that could last for hours. Muscle may not be built overnight, but drinking a glass of casein-rich milk is the ideal protein to consume right before bed, as it'll be more helpful throughout the night than any other protein option." The other benefits are that you will gain bigger muscle quicker, it aids in fat loss, builds strength, and helps with protecting your teeth! 

Which one do I use? Whey. Of course I am definitely willing to try the others, but I find whey protein beneficial to me.

Remember, when choosing any protein powder, look for LESS sugar and MORE protein! 

My favorite protein powder so far is Elite XT in Rich Vanilla. It goes SO well with my smoothies and it doesn't taste chalky or bland!

What's in My Lunchbox?

I've got a good one for y'all this week! (And maybe a little breakfast bonus too)

Do any of y'all like pesto? Oooor chicken salad? If so, you'll LOVE this pesto chicken salad recipe! 

I found this on Pinterest a while back, but tweaked it a bit. 

First, I will give you a homemade pesto recipe. If you don't want to use a homemade pesto, then that's fine too! Simply just scroll down to the chicken salad recipe.


My pictures show double what the recipe called for because I used some for dinner tonight! Just go by this recipe:

- 1 cup of fresh basil
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 3 tablespoons pine nuts
- 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
- salt and pepper to taste (I use pink salt)
- 1/3 cup olive oil


After I added the ingredients to the food processor, I had it on high until it chopped it the way I wanted it.
Wallllllla!!



YUM! Look how fresh that looks! 


Okay, here's what you'll need for the chicken salad:

- heaping 1/4 cup pesto 
- 2 Tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt
- 2 cups of shredded chicken (I used two small grilled chicken breasts)
- salt and pepper to taste


The picture really doesn't do it any justice! It's delicious! Literally, all you do is mix the ingredients and there you have it!

I like my chicken salad on 100% whole wheat/grain bread. Of course, feel free to add whatever else you want.

I also will be bringing this along with my usual fruit and veggies. Oh, and can't forget some whole wheat goldfish!

Here's a little breakfast bonus! 

For breakfast I enjoy smoothies, but sometimes I struggle with rushing in the morning and don't have time to make them. Well, problem solved as of now.

I have prepared the majority of my smoothies for the week, and now all I need to add to them is protein powder and a liquid!

Some have strawberries, blackberries, spinach, half of a banana, and chia seeds. 
The others have strawberries, pineapple, half of a banana, and chia seeds.

Back to School… Time to Fuel!

Okay… let me go ahead and apologize… I am extremely scatterbrained, overwhelmed, tired, and stressed right now. 

It's that time of year again, but this time for me it's a new grade level! This week the teachers went back to work and tomorrow is Meet the Teacher! AH! School officially starts Monday, August 25th…. and I always get those first day butterflies…

Okay, let me get this straight… I will be teaching a new grade level, with a new team, new curriculum, new students, and not to mention a state testing grade level. I am so nervous!! 

I just ask that you please pray for all of the teachers going back to school along with the students, and also please pray for my new teaching changes I have ahead of me. I feel as though my purpose is to help others and I pray that I can do that positively and faithfully this school year. I pray my students can gain better understandings of the material, learn from the help given to them, establish friends and support, and be confident within themselves.

With all of that being said, I need to go on a detox. A positive detox… positive on the inside and out! 

When I am stressed I eat. When I eat when I'm stressed, I eat a lot. When I eat a lot I get stressed. When I get stressed I become super negative. I don't know if that's just me or what, but my goal is to not let stress stand in my way! It not only effects me, but it can effect others around me and that is the absolute last thing I want! 

That is why I plan to try this detox! I know that eating right definitely helps me balance out my stress, but I also feel as though this detox with help me stay positive on the outside too!

I stumbled across this detox on Facebook. One of my good friends, Peyton, posted it on her blog. I found it VERY motivating and inspirational! 

The detox is… are you ready?…. the 21 Day Sugar Detox.

Sounds intense, right?

No sugar? Really? I can't even…

UMMM yes you can because if I can, you can! And I would love for you to take on this detox challenge with me! I plan on getting started on it very soon (I don't want to start it on the first day because I feel like it would be too much all at once!). It's not that I don't eat bad really, but I would love to give my body a cleanse after this chaos and overeating I've been having lately, and I think it will help my body gain some positivity inside and out! 

The rest of my post is truly for you to read Peyton's post about the detox. I feel as though she covers it perfectly. Remember, everybody is different. Your results might be different than hers or mine! Even if you don't start it when I do, I still think you should give it a try at some point. I would love to support you along the way!

Also, I really like how she says that it is way easier to do with a partner…. wink, wink!

I will of course be updating you when I start the detox, so keep a lookout!

Operation Fitness Class

Okay! I know I said I would only post 3 days a week, but this one holds some exciting news!

I will be conducting my very own fitness class after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays! I am beyond thrilled to have the chance to teach a workout class to my fellow teachers (and hopefully some non-teachers)!

My goal is to eventually move it to a local high school gym or other area to get more involved! Also, I eventually want to film some of the workouts for those of you who like to workout at home!

And guess what... It's FREE! 

This class will be a mixture of muscle toning and cardio… but I plan to make it FUN!

As of right now, I will be keeping a donation jar out for whoever wants to help me raise money for equipment. Also, I am in the process of buying a house, paying off my student loans, and a car so I figured whatever is left over would really help me establish a mini second job.

But that's not all! I will be donating a percentage of what I raise to a local foundation that helps out children in need. It's called Houston Children's Charity.

I am so excited to start this class and can't wait to see where it goes. It's definitely something I've been wanting to do, but I never thought I would.

But honestly, I believe in myself and I believe that I can do it! I'm so thankful for this chance to help out others!

What's in My Lunchbox?

Considering this is my first post, I hope you understand that they will improve the more I do them!

Also, I have been out of town this weekend so it's been a little hard for me to post!

Since it is so late and I've been pretty busy this weekends, this will just be a preview of a lunch idea for the week! Next week, I will for sure post every detail of my lunches.

Okay, here's what I grabbed from the store for the week:


Okay... I don't really use the milk for lunch, but whatevs...

Also, I bought some fresh Cajun turkey from the deli and some shredded Colby Jack cheese! 

**Remember! I am just posting the foods I get for lunch.**

Alright, here's a little something that I am making for lunch this week! It is seriously so yummy! And filling!


I'm making a wrap using a whole wheat tortilla, baby spinach, pico, red onions, Cajun turkey, shredded cheese, and jalapeƱo hummus!

Below is a picture of each layer! I start with the hummus then end up with the spinach on top!


Roll it up and there you have it! This is very yummy! I also bought some pita bread to mix it up. Obviously, you can substitute for more veggies or take away something you don't like! This is simple and satisfying!

It also goes well with some fresh fruit! I plan on taking this wrap with some fruit and the veggies I bought! I don't limit myself to fruits or veggies. They make great snacks throughout the day! I bought the Greek yogurt to mix with a Ranch packet. It goes great with the veggies or even as a spread on your wrap!



Nom nom!

Fashion Friday

Okay, I have a very special Fashion Friday right here y'all!

Let me start by asking this... Who's ready for some football?! Or Fall in general?!

I was definitely born and raised an SEC girl, so I definitely look forward to this time of year approaching. Well, today my sister is moving into her apartment in Oxford. I'm so beyond excited (and of course a little emotional) that she will be attending Ole Miss this fall and joining the SEC clan! It should be a fun football season to say the least... My dad went to Georgia and my husband and I went to Texas A&M. 

Another one of my favorite things about fall is the wardrobe! I absolutely LOVE thetransition clothes from Summer to Fall, so that's what I will be showing you today! 

Being a teacher, I love that I can wear these cute clothes to school!

Let's Go Grocery Shopping!

Okay. I don't know about ya'll, but going to the grocery store can be such a hassle sometimes. It's either packed, I go when I'm starving so I buy everything (and I let it go to waste), or I go when I'm full and don't even know what to get.

Well, if you have any of these problems, then I hope I am about to make it a lot easier for you!

I am going to break down a grocery list that I recommend for the best results. Of course, I don't get all of this stuff at the same time. I usually plan out what I want to eat for the week and go from there, but I am going to provide you with all of your basics that are the healthiest options. Remember, you do not have to get all of these, or you might even find healthy options to add to this list!

I have mentioned this before, and I will mention it again... it's best to stay on the outside aisles of a grocery store! This is where you will find most of the non-processed foods. Also, I try and eat clean, so that is what I am basing most of my list off of.

I typically go to the grocery store once a week. Usually on Sundays...when everything is sold out or picked over. Go figure.

So whatever you buy, don't get too much. Get just enough to last you the week. Usually, the foods that I am listing only last about a week anyways because they are fresh.

Fruits:

Honestly, you can get any fresh fruit you want! Fruit makes great snacks, desserts, and part of your breakfast.

My favorites:
Strawberries
Bananas (I like to cut some in half and freeze them for smoothies!)
Pineapple
Blackberries
Lemons (for my water)
Cucumber
Avocado (this is actually a healthy fat, but try and stay within the daily serving size)

Veggies:

You can pretty much get any fresh vegetable you want too. I never limit myself on how many veggies and fruit I eat.

My favorites:
Broccoli
Fresh Green Beans (I have a yummy recipe under My Recipes)
Fresh Spinach or "Power Greens" (I use spinach in my smoothies, in wraps, on sandwiches, or in salads)
Bell Pepper
Zucchini (SO good grilled!)
Mushrooms
Red Onions
Edamame

Herbs:

Mint (for my water)
Basil (I love basil! I actually have it growing in a mason jar. I love making pesto)

Proteins:

Boneless Skinless Chicken (I like to get the thin sliced for the panko crusted chicken under My Recipes. I also grill it… well, Justin grills it. The good thing about chicken is that you can freeze it so it lasts longer)
Turkey (freshly sliced from the deli, not pre-packaged. We also eat turkey bacon or turkey sausage for breakfast)
Chicken Sausage (LOVE it! I like the jalepeno kind.)
You can definitely get red meat and fish, but I don't eat a lot of red meat or fish. (Justin buys salmon and loves it)
Peanut Butter (aim for the all natural kind)
Eggs (I recommend egg whites)
Black Beans

Grains:

Brown Rice 
100% Whole Wheat/Grain Bread
100% Whole Wheat/Grain Tortillas or Pita Bread

Dairy:

2% or less milk (I like white and chocolate!)
Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (love it in my smoothies)
Greek Yogurt (plain is the best for you, and you can do so much with plain! You can make a healthier ranch dressing option, sweeten it with honey and vanilla, and you can use it in replace of sour cream or mayo)
Cheese (I like cheese… a lot, but I don't buy too much of it)

Snacks:

Besides fruits and veggies:
Granola bars (homemade or I prefer KIND bars! Aim for granola bars that are natural)
I like whole wheat Goldfish
I like baked tortilla chips with salsa
Annie's Homegrown has a good selection of organic snacks
Almonds

Condiments:

Bragg's Liquid Amino Acid (it's an awesome replacement for soy sauce)
Pink Salt
Pepper
Crushed Red Peppers
Hot Sauce (I love Tobasco)
Salsa (aim for the fresh kind or homemade kind!)
Olive Oil
Mustard




Okay, I know that this is just a list and not so much what I make with these items, but that's what my new posts, "What's in My Lunchbox?" are for! I will be posting what I make and include how I make it! I will also be posting more recipes once my new layout is set up. Keep a lookout for dinner, breakfast, sides, and snack recipes along with my lunch recipes!

Fashion Friday Preview

Alright y'all, I know my blog is aimed for everyone to achieve a healthier and happier lifestyle. Don't worry, my main posts will still consist of healthy options, fitness tips, and important nutrition facts. BUT! Once I started changing my lifestyle, I started to feel better about myself. I started to gain confidence. I definitely feel more confident in clothing!
